In the US, the Declaration of Independence (Unabhängigkeitserklärung) was only one step in a long battle to end slavery (Sklaverei) and give civil rights to African Americans. The fisrt African Americans came to Virginia in 1619 as slaves and soon the slave trade (Sklavenhandel) grew in importance. But right from the beginning an ethical dilemma arose which hasn't been fully solved (to solve = lösen) so far. How could a free society deny equal rights to some of its members?
