Dear Faultiere,
because of the current situation I just couldn't read a dystopian novel with you and decided on this work, which won the National Book Award and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in the "young adult jury" section in 2018. I hope you're interested in its topics and enjoy reading it. The author, Angie Thomas, started to write The Hate U Give as a short story in her senior year. She was cathartic at the time, and thought she was done telling Starr and Khalil's story because she follishliy hoped Oscar (Grant) wouldn't happen again. But then there was Trayvon (Martin), Michael (Brown), Eric (Garner) and Tamir (Rice). |
Before having the book:
Task 1: Choose one of the names given in the introduction a) Oscar Grant, b) Trayvon Martin c) Michael Brown d) Eric Garner and e) Tamir Rice. Do some online research: Who is he? What happend to him? Any additional information?
(In the optional meeting via Jami (Tuesday between 12 and 1 o'clock) you could exchange your findings about the different characters and I could moderate the talk.)
When having the book:
Task 2: Use the information from the introduction and task 1 as well as additional information from the texts in your bool on pp. 363-371 to collect information on the political and historical background of The Hate U Give.
a) Explain the term #BlackLivesMatter.
b) Explain why the #BlackLivesMatter movement started.
c) Explain the movement's historical background.
d) Explain why Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin etc. are important for Thomas and her work.
e) What is unique about the way Angie Thomas addresses the issues of #BlackLivesMatter in The Hate U Give?
f) In what way is Angie Thomas's own life linked to the issues of #BlackLivesMatter?
